What's the right age for a child to start badminton?

FYBBA coaches · 26 October 2026 · 4 min read

Parents ask us this more than anything else. The short answer: there's no single right age. What matters more is whether your child can follow simple instructions, stay with a group for an hour, and wants to be there.

Ages 3 to 6: play first

At FYBBA, children can join from age 3. At this age, sessions are mostly games: throwing, catching, running, balance and hitting a shuttle with a light racket. The aim is to enjoy moving and get used to the court, not to learn perfect technique.

Ages 7 to 12: building the basics

This is when most children start learning the proper grip, footwork and the main strokes. They can follow longer drills and start playing simple rallies and games with friends.

Teenagers and beginners who start later

It's never too late. Teenagers who start later often pick up the basics quickly because they're stronger and more coordinated. Coaches place every player by level, not only by age.

Signs your child is ready

  • They can listen to a coach and take turns in a group.
  • They have the energy for about an hour of activity.
  • They're curious about the game, even if they've only played at home.

The easiest way to find out

Come to a free tour. Your child can see the courts and meet the coaches, and you can ask which group would suit them before you decide anything.
